Mechanics of writing

I’ve spent the weekend reading a book on self-editing.

Apparently, I’ve been making textbook errors, and sending them, wrapped up in a novel manuscript, to agents & publishers.

book jacketThere is a lot of useful stuff in this book, Self-Editing for Fiction Writers, by Renni Browne & Dave King.

You can’t edit yourself into print if you don’t have the talent, but I’m sure that many of the problems pointed out in this book are reasons why so many otherwise talented authors don’t get published.

Surely, a publisher is more likely to say ‘make your heroine a transvestite after she escapes the convent on the back of a stegosaurus, and we’ll buy the book,’ to an author who understands the mechanics of writing, than ‘add the stegosaurus and while you’re at it, can you clean up the grammar, the point of view and the poor use of narrative tension?’
